The candidates met on the Clayton High School stage for the first and only debate of the race.

All three candidates for mayor of Clayton—Alex Berger III (former Ward 3 alderman), Harold Sanger (Alderman Ward 3) and Michelle Harris (Alderman Ward 2)—participated in a one hour debate Thursday in Clayton High School's auditorium. Several hundred came to watch.

The candidates gave opening remarks, then answered questions from a panel and from the audience.

They addressed keeping downtown Clayton vibrant, how to involve citizens in government, the connection to Clayton schools and the importance of cost-saving by working with nearby communities.

The three did not agree on whether Clayton should have spent $28 million on the new police department, considering the current financial position of the city.

The debate was sponsored by the Clayton Chamber of Commerce, along with Husch-Blackwell, the School District of Clayton and the Clayton Mayor's Youth Advisory Board.
