Is Claire McCaskill's Support for Same-Sex Marriage a Sign of Things to Come?

Clayton and Richmond Heights started protecting gay and lesbian people as early as 2011, when the cities added sexual orientation to their non-discrimination policies, but does McCaskill's announcement signal possible change across Missouri?

Claire McCaskill announced her support for same-sex marriage on Sunday, the Washington Post reports. McCaskill, a Democratic U.S. senator from Kirkwood, made the announcement on her personal Tumblr blog

"I have come to the conclusion that our government should not limit the right to marry based on who you love," McCaskill wrote. "Good people disagree with me. On the other hand, my children have a hard time understanding why this is even controversial. I think history will agree with my children."

In supporting same-sex marriage, McCaskill joins a growing list of politicians, including U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican from Ohio.

The city of Clayton added sexual orientation to its non-discrimination policy in Nov. 2011, and Richmond Heights followed in March 2012. The Clayton and Maplewood Richmond Heights school districts have similar protections in place.
