New porches and interpretive signage will be installed soon at 's historic thanks to donations totaling $125,000. Aldermen on April 24 unanimously approved the project, which is an initiative of the .

Funding is available because of contributions from Susan Hanley, a relative of original Hanley House homeowners Martin Franklin and Cyrene Clemens Hanley, and the Langenberg family of Clayton, an April 24 memo from City Manager Craig Owens and parks director Patty DeForrest states.

The original Hanley family consisted of those two adults and their 11 children, according to the Clayton History Society website. They began living in the house in 1857.

At this year's April 24 meeting, then-Ward 1 Alderman Judy Goodman said that years ago, the Hanley family would have been able to go onto the porches and see nothing but trees to the east and the west. Now, people sitting outside would see change in the form of corporate towers.

"That's what brings history to life," Goodman said.

The work is expected to begin by Oct. 1 this year and must be completed by March 1, according to the terms of the project contract. A dedication will happen by April 1.
