A New Era: Sanger Sworn in as Clayton's New Mayor

Harold Sanger took over the reins from Linda Goldstein Tuesday night.

After six years as mayor and eight more on the Clayton board of aldermen, Linda Goldstein officiated her final meeting Tuesday night in Clayton.

After the board certified the April 2 election results, Goldstein adjourned the meeting. Harold Sanger was  sworn in as the new mayor.

The final certified vote tally was as follows:

  • Michelle Harris — 944
  • Alex Berger III — 599

The totals did not change from the unofficial totals reported on election night.

Sanger said the evening's proceedings, which included several tributes to Goldstein and her service to the city, were not about the person in the mayor's seat.

"Tonight is not about me and it's not about Linda either," he said. "It is about those that came before us and the legacy that we will leave for those that come after us."

Sanger praised Goldstein's service, telling the audience that she "graciously guided the city through the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression."

The new mayor also praised the members of the board of aldermen, saying he had met with each elected official individually prior to Tuesday's swearing in.

"They were all enthusiastic and ready to move forward," he said.

He added that the most enthusiasm and drive to make Clayton a better place came from the two aldermen who ran against him in the mayoral race.
