Missing 84-Year-Old Found in Richmond Heights

A gas station clerk helped the Carthage man.

A missing Carthage, MO, man has been reunited with his family after driving approximately 260 miles to a Richmond Heights gas station.

The 84-year-old had been reported as a missing person in Carthage, a city located outside of Joplin in the southwest corner of the state. Family members were "beside themselves," Sgt. Doug Schaeffler of the Richmond Heights Police Department said.

An alert clerk at Circle K gas station, 1402 S. Hanley Rd., noticed him Feb. 7 and provided help. Police were contacted, arrived at the gas station and learned of his missing-person status upon investigation.

Schaeffler described it as a "pretty happy ending."

It's unclear why the man left without notifying others.
