Clayton Priest's Pal Gets Three Years for Ponzi Scheme
Kansas attorney James Scott Brown received the sentence Tuesday in St. Louis.
A Kansas attorney has been sentenced for his role in a , a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for Western District of Missouri states.
James Scott Brown, 67, of Leawood, KS, received three years in federal prison without parole and must pay more than $34 million in restitution, the release states. The sentencing happened Tuesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis.
Former attorney and priest Martin T. Sigillito, 63, of Webster Groves has been convicted of leading the Ponzi scheme. He and another co-defendant, Derek J. Smith, 68, of Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom have not yet been sentenced.
Investors thought they were giving money to British Lending Program (BLP) toward real estate development projects.
Brown practiced law in England for several years leading up to 2000. Between 2000 and 2010, he worked with BLP and took "substantial fees," the release states. He did business as British American Group, as well as J. Scott Brown and Associates.
