Clayton Police to Seek Re-Accreditation in February

Community feedback about the department's compliance with public safety standards will be solicited at an information session Feb. 9 at The Center of Clayton.

Residents of Clayton and Clayton Police Department employees are invited to offer comments about the department at , a news release from the city states. The meeting is being held as part of the department's voluntary efforts to achieve re-accreditation for a fourth time.

It will happen in Room C at The Center of Clayton.

The re-accreditation process will begin Feb. 8 and run for four days. Compliance with standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will be assessed by Deputy Chief Francis Foley of the Willowbrook (IL) Police Department and Josel Theurer of the Plano (TX) Police Department.

As part of their work, Clayton accreditation-program manager Matt Jacobson said, they will:

  • review written policies and procedures
  • examine supporting documentation
  • interview department employees
  • conduct ride-along patrols
  • tour agency facilities
  • visit offices and other locations

Foley and Theurer then are to report back to the full accreditation commission, which will decide whether to grant re-accreditation. Accreditation remains effective for three years.

According to the release: "Successful compliance with the necessary qualifications for its fourth re-accreditation will be a significant achievement that underscores the department’s long-standing commitment to excellence, Chief Tom Byrne said."

Those who are unable to attend the meeting may provide feedback between 2 and 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 by calling 314-290-8585. Comments in person or by phone will be limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency's ability to comply with standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
