Clayton Break-Ins May Be Connected to Crimes in Olivette

Olivette Det. Craig Schneider said police are investigating whether cases at Subway and Chevy's in Olivette are connected to cases in U City, Clayton and Maryland Heights.

Burglars smashed a concrete block through the door of the new Subway restaurant on Jan. 8. was broken into and thieves took a cash box.

Just a few days earlier, on Christmas Eve, burglars also smashed the door at the Chevy's Fresh Mex restaurant down Olive Boulevard.

Police say the incidents may be related—and may be related to similar incidents in Clayton, University City and Maryland Heights.

Olivette Det. Craig Schneider said he is consulting with colleagues in neighboring communities on the case.

"We're coordinating with other agencies," he said. "There have been other municipalities that have had doors smashed. It's the same (mode of operation) as the Subway."

In both Olivette cases, Schneider said, someone broke the front door glass. In the Subway incident, police found a concrete block. Nothing was left at the scene in the Chevy's incident; in both cases, nothing was taken.

"I have heard bits and pieces from U. City, Maryland Heights and Clayton," Schneider said. "I have feelers out to other departments to see whether they've had issues."
