My son reads constantly and always joins the summer reading program at the library. We try to read a few suggestions from the school's list, but otherwise he's free to read what he wants - occasionally with some subtle guidance from me.

I agree, Laura. My siblings and I always participated in the summer reading program at the library, and I know it motivated me to have a goal to shoot for in terms of number of books read. And if you're interested in finding books about a particular subject, just ask — the librarians I know would be eager to help identify books that fit your interests.

Summers can turn into such productive time for both children and their parents. Nothing better than some quiet reading time.
