Your 16-year-old comes home and proudly announces she is leaving suburban St. Louis for beautiful Padre Island during spring break, along with four other friends.
They are driving, and there will be no chaperones along. She won't tell you who else is going on the trip.

I live and work here in south padre and there is NO WAY i would let a 16 year old anywhere near this place during spring break without MOM or DAD tied to her with a rope

I say this with the caveat that I don't have teenagers yet, but this seems to be a no-brainer. No way! First, there should be no "announcements" - there should be asking for permission. And the idea that a teen could take off with anonymous friends with no chaperone to another state? Not in my house.

Last summer, my teenaged daughter announced she was going to a three week intensive class in England, followed by an optional week in Paris. Her school counsellor heartily agreed with her plan. I countered with a job at McDonald's running the fry machine.

This is a real challenge for parents with concerns. There is a time to be strict, and time to loosen up. A tough balancing act.
