Delta Gamma: New to the Neighborhood…Sort Of

Delta Gamma Center for Children has been helping children with visual impairments for 60 years and is now located in Richmond Heights.

The has been providing services to children who are blind or visually impaired and their families for 60 years.  In 1951, the Center got its start when a group of St. Louis Delta Gamma alumnae started a home-based program to aid visually impaired infants and toddlers, and their families.  Since then, the organization has seen several iterations of its name; great growth in the programs, both in terms of families served and services offered, and a variety of locations for administration, individual assessment, and therapy and group activities.

The latest change -- one of the biggest yet -- came in April 2009 when the Delta Gamma Center moved from a relatively small rental space into a new 16,500 square-foot facility in Richmond Heights.   The building was previously, Arts of Asia, a retail and warehouse space for many years.

The new location includes a Resource Center with resources for everyone including Braille and large print books for children, toy loan library and adapted games and vision technology, classrooms dedicated to music, art, motor development and more, light activity room for functional vision evaluation and activities, a unique outdoor play space and, a large community meeting room.

While the majority of the programs for the 250 or so families served remain home-based, now there is plenty of highly-functional space for individual assessment of vision and mobility, Buddy Builder classes where parents and children connect with each other through music and play, and information for the community at large about visual impairments in children.

If you are interested in receiving services for your child or would like to volunteer for the Delta Gamma Center, call 314-776-1300 or info@dgckids.org or go to www.dgckids.org.
