Movie Review - Planes

Planes **½ (PG) Following Cars and its sequel, this third feature-length ‘toon about races in a world inhabited by anthropomorphized machines takes us to the skies. Now it’s airplanes in the starring roles, with land vehicles in support. A plucky crop duster yearns to compete in the big annual race that circles the globe. It’s the same concept as usual - the lovable underdog with the support of friends overcoming an assortment of foes and obstacles. Besides the Cars flicks, we just got another dose of the same when the snail in Turbo made it to the Indy 500.

The deep, talented voice cast includes Dane Cook, John Cleese, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias, and St. Louis native Cedric the Entertainer. The script is laced liberally with puns (race announcer Brent Mustangburger typifies the groaners), but the animation, even in 3-D, is surprisingly bland. The aerobatics and world of exotic locations should have popped more on a big screen, especially considering the film’s Disney pedigree, and the guiding hand of John Lasseter, who has directed some of Pixar’s better productions. Even so, there’s enough color and movement to provide a passable family outing, favoring the youngest members of the clan. And there will be merchandising... (8/9/13)
