DVD Review - Kennedy's Brain

Kennedy’s Brain **½ (NR) This Swedish telefilm may be oddly named for its actual content, but it’s still an engaging geopolitical murder mystery. An archaeologist’s son is found dead. The police assume it’s suicide. Mom doesn’t buy it, even though the two haven’t maintained close contact for a while. He was an aspiring investigative journalist who had just returned from Africa. She learns he was on the verge of breaking a huge scandal, but has no idea of its nature. Off to the Dark Continent she goes.

The three-hour, two-disc set follows mom through an arduous ordeal, spanning several countries and dangers from more sources than any middle-aged academic not named Indiana Jones could expect to face, much less endure. The plot, based on a novel by Henning Mankell, is sufficiently intricate to sustain the suspense. Our protagonist doesn’t suddenly morph into a distaff version of Liam Neeson, keeping the proceedings relatively relatable. African locations and characters enhance the texture and import of both stories - the film and the dirty secrets the son was trying to expose. I assume the reason for the title was clarified more in the source novel than the movie
