Fontella Bass Memorial Service

The memorial service for Fontella Bass was held at Shalom City of Peace Church in North County.

Fontella Bass, daughter of gospel singer, Martha Bass Peaston, died 12-26-2012.

Fontella, known as "Foni" to her friends, sang not only gospel, but also "soul" and "rhythm and blues". A memorial service was held on 1/4/2013 at Shalom City of Peace Church.

Kelly Jackson, News Channel 5 (NBC affiliate) emceed the program of remembrance which included poetry, testimonials, screening of a short film documentary, and live music.

In addition to her talented offspring, Ms Bass had an extended musical "family" including The Bosman Twins and Marsha Evans. Many of them performed during the 2.5 hr service. Singing "Rescue Me", her most famous pop hit (1965) brought the audience of several hundred to their feet, clapping and swaying in time to the music.

Finally, a proclamation was read from the mayor of University City declaring 1/4/2013, "FontellaBass Day". Ms Bass, a long-time resident of University City, has a star on its Walk of Fame in the 6600 block of Delmar Blvd.
