Last night, my Asian neighbor asked me to take him to the Korean Grocery Store, Walmart, and Shop 'N Save.
I asked him if he was "stocking up" for the end of the world. He said it might as well be the end of the world as Ms. Park (daughter of former dictator) got elected president in Korea. He is convinced her election will be an "economic" end-of-the-world as his country slides into financial chaos.
We finished our shopping and he insisted on taking me to the Joy Luck Buffet. We ordered the ultimate dish there: the all-you-could-cook and the all-you-could-eat buffet.
For the next two hours we cooked lamb, squid, shrimp, vegetables, and glass noodles in the boiling table-side Sterno cookers. We helped ourselves liberally to the three buffet tables. We headed home.
An hour later, my intestines felt like it would be the end of the world. They were boiling, roiling, and hot like lava. Guess I was too liberal with the hot sauces. I went to bed thinking that if the world ended in the morning, at least I would be well fed.
This morning dawned bright and cold. My first thought was: the world has not ended, so I set to work baking my holiday sugar cookies.
In honor of the Mayans, I shaped some into suns (red sugar) and moons (green sugar). I used my antique pressed glass toothpick holder with the fluted edge for the suns and a shot glass for the moons.
I had the television on for news of the world's demise. One of the local weathermen came on and said, "You heard about the three Mayans who walked into the bar?...(long pause)...Absolutely nothing happened!" I chuckled as I pulled my "end-of-the-world" Xmas cookies out of the oven.
The first day of winter (December 21) was starting out cold and clear outside, but warm and full of wonderful aromas inside.
