Davina and the Vagabonds

While a student at SLU, I worked part-time at Shakee's Pizza Parlor downtown where Tiger Rag Forever would play blues and jazz. Davina and the Vagabonds took me back to that scene!

Davina and the Vagabonds rocked the house to a standing room only crowd this past weekend. The band consists of Davina (lead singer and keyboards), Dan (trumpet), Michael (bass player), Ben (trombone), and Miguel (drums).

The band hails from Minneapolis-St Paul, MN, not far from legendary blues Highway 61, which stretches from Minnesota to New Orleans and includes St Louis and Memphis. Davina said she loves St Louis and this is their third time playing here in as many years.

The band played such favorites as "Lipstick", "Bourbon Street Parade", some Wilson Pickett songs and many others. The blues tradition continues for the month of April at Blues City Deli on Thursdays and Saturdays. Blues City Deli has lip-smacking sandwiches and one of the best "pulled pork" sandwiches in The Lou. Spotted in the crowd Saturday afternoon was Ms Jubilee (or her doppelganger?), Dre (KDHX d.j.), and Willy Bailey, blues connesiuer.
