Chinese Express and 24-Hour Culture

Several businesses in "edge city" are open 24 hrs/day and I wish this one was!

Several years ago, a book was written about "edge city". It told the tale of how lively businesses and culture spring up at the edges of neighboring cities. This is certainly true for which borders and the City of St Louis at its Eastern end.

, , and the Amoco (now B.P.) gas station are all open 24 hours. Technically, the is open 24 hours as you can get a room anytime. The has begun showing midnight films---wouldn't it be cool to see a 3 a.m. newly released movie with a bunch of other insomniacs?

One of my favorite places to eat is the " Restaurant", 7022 Clayton Rd, 63117, 314-781-8898. Nestled in the "triangle" of Clayton Rd and Oakland Ave, right between the Cheshire Inn, Hi-Pointe Theater, and Amoco Gas Station, it is open seven days/week.

Lunch "specials" (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) are the combination plates ($5.75-7.25) which include your entree (fish, pork, chicken, beef, or vegetables), a side of fried rice, two crab Rangoon, and a choice of soup (egg drop or hot and sour). The combination plates are also served during dinner (3 p.m.-closing) and cost $1.00 more than at lunch-time. Prices include taxes and Visa and MasterCard have $5.00 minimums.

A complete line of St. Paul sandwiches, Egg Foo Young, and seafood, beef, or poultry dishes are also served in half or whole orders, ranging from $4.00-11.25. My son loves the Kung Pao Chicken and the menu warns that it is "hot and spicey".

The "Chef's Specialties" range in price from $9.50 for Tofu with Vegetables to $13.50 for Sea Food Delight or Beef and Chicken Hunan Style. The General Tso's Chicken (Sesame Chicken) is especially tasty, although hot and spicy. My favorite off this part of the menu is "Sizzling Three Musketeers" which consists of jumbo shrimp, scallops, and beef with broccoli, and water chestnuts in a "secret sauce".

The restaurant has been operated by the same family at this location for years. You are likely to see Mom and Pop cooking in the kitchen and a few other relatives taking orders or bussing tables. Open for 11 hours/day, I keep hoping the family will become part of "edge city's" 24 hour culture so that I could enjoy my Asian food cravings any time of the day!
