Cardboard Regatta Redux

Better than the Soapbox Derby, more suspensful than a mystery novel, and good clean fun, the Cardboard Regatta went off flawlessly at the Maplewood Pool.

The Cardboard Regatta at the Maplewood Pool sported 11 entries. From the Sebas (which looked like Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose") to a Viking Long Ship, the cardboard boats were decorative and imaginative. Would they stay the course without sinking?

Participants from Richmond Heights, Maplewood, Ladue, Webster Groves,  Brentwood, and University City made for a lively and diverse crowd. Boats raced two at a time with two participants in life vests and paddles half the length of the pool and then turned around to starting point. The finish times ranged from 1.05 minutes to 2.32 minutes.

First place and the fastest time went to the "Popular Penguins", a silver duct tape wrapped conglomeration of seven tubes. Second place went to "Cheese and Quackers", paddled by duct tape wrapped tennis rackets. "Best Decorated" went to "Gator Aid". The "Titanic Award" went to the entry from Maplewood-Richmond Heights Parks Departments: when the lifeguards flipped off their sinking boat, "Gyrados", they dog paddled in and still lost to their opponent.
