Giving in a Tough Economy

Giving made simple -- one daily click online and you decide how a big corporation gives away $2 million

Giving USA recently released its annual report on charitable giving in the U.S. for 2010. They prefaced their report by citing actual IRS statistics that showed charitable donations had declined by more than 13 percent during 2008 and 2009. While giving did rise 2.1 percent in 2010, it will take several more years to recover fully at that rate.

There’s no doubt that people are still struggling with the economy… and nonprofit organizations continue to be challenged in fundraising. Which is why the Giving Made Simple campaign introduced by Sam’s Club this month is so exciting.

What could be simpler than going online once a day and casting your vote for one of four charitable causes: promoting wellness in adults 50+; promoting healthy habits in kids; preventing childhood obesity; or creating healthier communities? Every day, whenever a Sam’s Club member casts a vote, the organization of your choice receives $5. Organizations like OASIS could earn up to $500,000… and it won’t cost you a penny.

On July 26, anyone with a Twitter account can also vote by “tweeting” up to 20 times, with $5 going to charity for every tweet.  You could donate $100 in a matter of a few minutes!

These days, nonprofit organizations need your support more than ever. Even if things are tight for you, you can lend a hand by helping to direct how a big corporation should spend its money. Let’s get out the vote.
