"In Praise of Public Life"

The future of our country depends on an engaged citizenry and our willingness to participate in the political process.

I couldn't help but think about Joseph Lieberman's book, "In Praise of Public Life", as I collected my thoughts for a tribute I will be giving to retiring aldermen Steve Lichtenfeld and this coming Tuesday evening.  They, like Senator Lieberman and so many other elected officials, have spent countless hours of their time, energy and expertise in service to their fellow citizens.

We are fortunate to live in a democracy where freedom, opportunity, and a representative government are principles we enjoy.  It's important for all of us to participate in the political process, whether to vote or to serve in office, in order to protect our rights and to help make government better.  The future of our country depends on an engaged citizenry.

So, thank you to Alderman Lichtenfeld, Alderman Goodman, and to all who have contributed to making our communities and our country an even better place.  And to those who are beginning a term in office, there is much work to do and we are grateful for your willingness to serve.  Public service is a duty, honor, and privilege!
