How to know when you should get a new divorce attorney

1. You feel like you don't know what is going on in your case. Like many family law attorneys, we send clients copies of everything: copies of e-mails and letters to and from other attorneys and others involved in the case, as well as pleadings (papers filed in court) filed by us or anyone else in the case. You shouldn't have to go to casenet on the Internet to find out what is going on in your own case. If you are not getting copies of documents relating to your case, ask for them. If your request is not met, it's time for a new attorney. Your phone calls should be returned within one business day by the attorney or someone on his or her staff. If it routinely takes more than one business day to return your calls or your calls are always returned by a non-attorney staff person, it's time for a new attorney. If the attorney's fees that you are spending are close to or more than the asset you are fighting about or if you are mainly fighting about who will be responsible for debt and your attorney has not referred you to a bankruptcy attorney, it's time for a new attorney. Finally, if your attorney always agrees with you and then when things don't go your way, blames the judge or the Guardian ad Litem or the weather, you have an attorney who is telling you what you want to hear. Ignore the reputation and the recommendation and go with your gut. It's time for a new attorney. For more articles like this, go to www.thecarsonlawfirm.com/virtual-coffee-break
