1. Make certain that your house is in order, emotionally speaking.  Anger and resentment and regret are understandable emotions in the context of a divorce, but not productive and may result in higher legal fees.  If you are going to file for divorce, invest in an hour or two with a therapist. Likewise if you are served with divorce papers.

2.  Choose your attorney carefully. If the attorney has no or limited staff, most if not all of the work on your file will be done at the attorney's billing rate, which is certain to be more expensive than the rate for a paralegal or law student.

 3.  Be a good member of the team. Do what you are asked in a timely manner. If you have questions for your attorney, write them down before you talk with or meet with him or her. Many attorneys will communicate by e-mail, and that is often the most efficient way to communicate.

4.  Talk to your attorney about what method of communication will work for you: do you want to be texted or e-mailed or called (if so, at what number). Also if there are certain times of day when you are generally available, let your attorney know. Obviously, there are exceptions, but increasing the probability of successful contact can help keep costs down.

5.  Pay your bills on time and if you can't pay in full, make payment arrangements and stick to them. Attorneys bill for their time, whether that is trying to collect your bill or trying to settle your case.
