CMT Kicks Off its Ten Toes Express Session with Tour of Lafayette Square

Citizens for Modern Transit’s (CMT) successful Ten Toe Express program, with over 7,000 participants, many over the age of 60, will kickoff its fall 2013 session on September 6 with an architectural tour of Lafayette Square. Ten Toes Express participants learn how easy it is to utilize the region’s public transit offerings and their own ten toes to get around town. This fall, that number is expected to spike as CMT is expanding the program with new Walking Groups, new destinations, new partners and new special walks. St. Louisans can register for the Ten Toe Express Program online at www.tentoes.cmt-stl.org or by calling 314-231-7272 to learn more. The Ten Toe Express program is designed to help area residents increase their independence, accessibility to places and overall health by learning how to utilize MetroBus routes and the MetroLink alignment when heading to a countless number of St. Louis area destinations. Online tools and the ability to join as many as 60 different guided walk tours during the 12 week fall session make it easy for individuals to familiarize themselves with the process. Ten Toe Walk Maps with very detailed directions to as many as 100 different regional destinations are available for those who prefer self-guided tours. The program also aims to improve overall health by providing access to walking and eating logs, checklists, tools to measure and record steps, stretching tips, background on the benefits of exercise and nutritional education. After retiring about 5 years ago, local Affton resident Dan O’Connor wanted to do something active outside so he got involved with the Ten Toe Express Program as a walk leader. “I really enjoy it,” commented O’Connor. “I meet new people, get outside and walk, and have seen so many interesting things. In fact, I’ve probably seen more of St. Louis in the last six years than I have in the first 65, and I’ve been a St. Louis native all of my life.” Fall walking groups will gather weekly at the Brentwood, Forest Park, Belleville, North Hanley, Rock Road and Shrewsbury MetroLink stations. Check online for walk schedules and details at http://tentoes.cmt-stl.org/Home/tabid/59/Default.aspx. The Fall 2013 Ten Toes Express Kick Off Walk, will be an architectural tour of Lafayette Square scheduled for Friday, September 6 at 9 am. Mr. Bob Winters, AIA, is a principal with OWH, a full service architectural, planning, and interiors firm here in St. Louis and will lead the tour. This architectural tour will feature new park renovations, the grounds keeper’s house, French style revival influences on the houses ringing the park, highlights of the integration of new and old architecture, and will conclude at the business district where walkers will have the option to dine in one of the independent restaurants located in the Square’s thriving restaurant district. The meeting point for this walk/tour will be the Union Station MetroLink Station at 9:00 am. The group will then walk 1 mile to the Lafayette Square neighborhood, and another 1.5 miles around the square. Participants have the option of returning by bus or foot. You are required to be a registered Ten Toe Participant to attend the walk and Ten Toe Walkers should RSVP by writing info@cmt-stl.org or calling CMT at 314-231-7272.
