The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District demonstrates how U.S. schools can prioritize healthy eating among students, a commentary published in Wednesday's St. Louis Post-Dispatch states.

But Debra Haire-Joshu, director of Washington University's Center for Obesity Prevention and Policy Research, expresses concern that legislators are pushing back against healthy-eating guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, jeopardizing the likelihood that others will follow MRH.

Quoting from the commentary:

"Unfortunately, there is a real threat that Congress will stand in the way of these important changes. The House Appropriations Committee passed a bill to block USDA efforts to implement the guidelines. The Senate now needs to decide if it will continue to support these changes or reverse course. Will it prioritize the interests of wealthy lobbyists at the expense of our children?"
