Patch Picks: Events and Happenings Jan. 9-15

Here's what's happening in and near Richmond Heights, Clayton, Ladue and University City.

Clayton-Richmond Heights Patch teams up with neighboring Patch sites each week to round up events and happenings in the area. Here are our picks for this week.

Monday, Jan. 9. If you’ve vowed to lose weight this year, you’ll be happy to know that the St. Louis Lose to Win Challenge, sponsored by SSM Health Care, will start Jan. 21. Signup begins on Monday, and space is limited to the first 1,200 participants, so get your registration in early. Locally, you can join the challenge and participate through in .

Tuesday, Jan. 10. Feeling artistic? On Tuesday, you can join the in for the Tuesday Night Sketch Group at 2 Oak Knoll Park in the third-floor studio. Participants will have the opportunity to draw a live model in one pose for the entire evening. Cost is $5 to $6. If you’re more into art of the musical variety, you might want to check out Avicii, who will play at in the Delmar Loop on Tuesday. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8. Tickets are $36.50 for general admission and $51.50 for a reserved balcony. All ages are welcome, but you need to be over 21 to watch from the balcony. There’s a $2 surcharge at the door. Wednesday, Jan. 11. Do you have a ninth grader at in Ladue? If so, you’ll want to head to the JBS Dining Room at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a Grade 9 Parent Meeting. The meeting will address issues that are of interest to ninth graders and their families, including developmental issues, college planning, volunteer work and more. Light refreshments will be served. Thursday, Jan. 12. Thursday looks like a day for writers and readers at in Ladue. At 9:30 a.m., you can learn to improve your keyboarding skills, increase your typing speed and accuracy as well as getting tips on using the Internet in the Typing Practice class. At 1:40 p.m., join the HQ Afternoon Book Discussion Group to discuss “In the Garden of Beasts,” by Erik Larson. For more information, visit the St. Louis County Library’s website.

Friday, Jan. 13. Candidate filing continues for the April 3 municipal election in University City. Candidates who wish to fill one of the open Council seats may file on Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at in the City Clerk’s office, located at 6801 Delmar Blvd. For more information, visit the University City website.

And in Ladue, students at can begin enrolling for Camp Pegasus on Friday. There are three two-week sessions set for June 18 to 29, July 2 to 13 and July 16 to 27. A variety of programs are available. For more information, visit the Camp Pegasus page on the MICDS website.

Saturday, Jan. 14. If you’re looking for an entertaining family event on Saturday, look no further than the . This free event will be held in the University City Loop starting at 10 a.m. and features prizes frozen in ice cubes, including $1,000 in dollar coins frozen in ice cubes, along with 9,000 chocolate coins. You’ll also be treated to live ice carving demonstrations (with chain saws) by Ice Visions at Fitz’s, and there will be a video game lounge in the courtyard at Moonrise Hotel—and much more.
