Zucchini Car Races

That's right, Zucchini Car Races! On Saturday, September 28 the Clayton Farmer's Market is hosting this inaugural event. Vrroom, Vrooom!!

Recently, one of the Clayton Farmer's Market's regular market-goers, Gail Lang came back all excited from a trip to Seattle, Washington talking about Zucchini Car Races.

She had visited the Phinney Farmer's Market  out there on the day they held their annual and very popular races and thought "we have to do this back home in St. Louis."

When Gail first described the Zucchini Car Races to me, I said "zucchini what???"--just as everyone does when I describe the event to them.  Not to be deterred, she sent me photos and links for information on the web.

Upon doing a search, I discovered that the old adage which says that trends happen in the Midwest later than they happen on the coasts is true.  Apparently, they've been having Zucchini Car Races  at Farmer's Markets in California for over twenty years!  Who knew? We didn't.

Well that's about to change and one great thing about Farmer's Markets is they're adaptable and can change as quickly as Midwest weather patterns.  Another great thing is the collaborative relationships we have with our area's wonderful community organizations.

I posed the Zucchini Car Race idea to the folks at the Mid-County YMCA and they loved it.  Greg Keller, their Community Relations Coordinator has arranged for the building of the Zucchini Car Race Track.

Add Zucchinis from MK Fruits & Veggies, a table full of Wooden Wheels and Car Decorations, a Pit Crew of helpers and we're off to the Races!

Kids are invited to come to the Market, build a Zucchini Car and race it on the custom made Race Track!!  Everyone wins a prize!

Now when someone says "Zucchini what??", you can say "Zucchini Car Races of course!!" Check them out at the Clayton Farmer's Market.
