The Simple Pleasures In Life Are The Best!

When life's busy-ness threatens to overwhelm your peace of mind, push the pause button and take a moment to notice the simple pleasures surrounding you wherever you happen to be.

Last Saturday at the Clayton Farmer's Market, I began to get worried because we had a nice rain-shower about a half hour into the morning.  Even though I was prepared for the possibility of rain or a thunderstorm because I checked the weather forecast, all kinds of things can happen during a storm at an outdoor market.

Tents can blow over and products can get damaged.  Customers might stay home.  And sheesh, we might have to shut down the electricity to the band playing music, and heaven-forbid, to the young woman who makes the best Belgium waffles in the world.  Imagining possible doom, I gave the signal to open the Market early.

As I sat under the Market Manager's tent watching the morning's activities through a light, misty rain--I realized t h i s  i s  g o o d!  The rain brought cooler air and a nice breeze.  The hardy, early morning regulars came with and without umbrellas.   They were slightly more mission-oriented to nab their favorite veggies, but over-all their attitude was one of unconcern.  And only one tent pretended it was on an airplane runway.

It was still raining when the Mound City Slickers (the band) arrived, so they began their set unplugged. The sound of Old-Time fiddle music blended with the percussion of the rain and folks began to perk up. I don't know who put in the request for the clouds to part, but that's what happened!

The sun came out and the Market filled up with fair-weather shoppers.  The band amped up the music and the aroma of fresh, off-the-griddle Sugar Waffles wafted through the air. Bees buzzed around the fresh-cut flowers from the Mueller's Farm and I had the pleasure of watching a little curly haired girl, sitting on the curb and eating her very first peach--so absorbed in her own simple pleasure that the hum of the Market pleasantly passed her by.
