The Fireworks of Freshness

Extend your Independence Day Celebrations into the weekend with a visit to the Clayton Farmer's Market.

While big fireworks displays are among the most favorite ways we've traditionally honored the Fourth of July in America, the recent cancellations of many citys' fireworks, caused us to more readily appreciate other ways of celebrating our Country's independence.

There are many ways to celebrate in simple everyday ways and I think when the huge explosions of colors in the night-time sky are taken away, we're left to consider other options.

Crunchy kernels of sweet corn bursting with buttery sweetness or ripe sort of tart-yet still sweet tomatoes moistening our palette.  What would we do without taste buds?  I even hate to pose the question because I love the minute explosions of flavor that my taste-buds celebrate every time I eat really, really fresh, live or very well prepared food.

Salty, bitter, sour, sweet and savory are what the receptors on our tongues identify as taste in our food. And what's really cool about all of these tastes is that when we make sure we get a variety of them along with a wide variety of different food colors---we're also satisfying our nutritional needs in a more balanced and fulfilling way--without even trying.

Beyond the hot and spicy BBQ and creamy potato salad that are synonymous with summer holidays, I encourage you to notice the other foods which often require little or no preparation and yet they deliver exquisite moments of celebratory pleasure with every bite.
