Preserve the Clayton Farmer's Market

An open letter to promote the preservation of the Clayton Farmer's Market. Vote for the Market to be included in the City's "C the Future" campaign!

The Clayton Farmer's Market is once again a premiere farmers market in mid St. Louis County.  Many new, exciting programs and amenties were introduced in the past year to spruce up the market and give it a fun, festival like atmosphere.

With the additions of Children's Activities, Live Music, and a Dine at the Market area complete with patio umbrellas, tables and lawn chairs, the Market has become an inviting weekly Saturday morning destination. Not just for Clayton residents but for residents in the whole region.

Community space was created under shade trees where market patrons of all ages can feel welcomed and at home.  We now offer Special Events  and Culinary Demonstrations to spice up the farmers market experience.  Every week new market-goers are discovering this white-tented gem.

The Market has always offered the finest in regional, farm fresh produce and hand-crafted specialty foods. But quality, local products are no longer enough to insure the success of a farmers market in a large metropolitan area.  Market-goers have come to expect so much more.

As the Manager of the Clayton Farmer's Market this year and last and a market-goer for the past twelve years (since its beginning in 2000), I've had the unique and rewarding experience of participating in this market's revival.

Now that all these wonderful changes and updates have been made, it's time to Preserve and Grow the Market--for the next twelve years and longer!

Here's what's needed to Preserve the Clayton Farmer's Market:

Increase the Operating Budget
Develop a 5-Year Business Plan
Provide an on-site storage facility
Incorporate as a non-profit to be eligible for federal grants
Expand community outreach and volunteer programs
Encourage collaborations with small businesses
Expand sponsorship/underwriting programs

Next year the City of Clayton is celebrating its "100 Year Anniversary" and it has launched a campaign called "C the Future" to enist ideas from the community "that will directly impact the strategic direction of Clayton for years to come."  It is called “C the Future” with us!

The Clayton Farmer’s Market is a jewel in a City that provides a beautiful setting.  Let's create the support which keeps both of them shining brightly together for many years to come.

See you at the market,
