MORNINGS ARE COOL AND SO ARE YOU!
Who says these are the "dog days of summer?" The history books say the most sultry time of the summer from about early July to late August are called the "dog days" for a reason.
When it's too hot to be out and about in the afternoon and there seems to be no easy relief from these sweltering days, you are experiencing the "dog days of summer." Do you feel lazy and lethargic? Are you constantly imagining yourself by a cool body of water? How about getting into your car after it sat in the sun for hours--do you lean your face over the AC vent? Yep, those are all symptoms of your summer going to the dogs.
Before there were clocks and calenders as we know them today, the passing of time was measured by the movement of the sun, moon and stars. In ancient times the stars in the sky were very visible and during the hottest time of the the year in the north, July through August, the star Sirius was the biggest and brightest in the night sky. Sirius is also known as the "big dog star" or Canis Major because it and the other stars around it look like the shape of a dog.
Another way to handle these "dog days" is to get outside in the morning. Recently the temps began dropping at night leaving us with fairly cool mornings-at least compared to the rest of the day. These cooler nights are also helping to relieve the stress the heat and drought placed on our farmers' vegetable and fruit plants, so produce at the Clayton Farmer's Market is beginning to perk up and look more lively--just like us.
