Vino Nadoz Wine Bar to Open Wednesday in Richmond Heights

Owners Steven and Kathy Becker say the location will offer affordable wines and meals meant to be paired with them.

Vino Nadoz aims to be a place where people can learn about wine and how it can complement a meal, its owners said.

The Richmond Heights wine bar, located at 16 The Boulevard, is set to open for the first time at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

"Wine is a food, it's a growing object," said Steven Becker, who owns Vino Nadoz with his wife, Kathy. His family started Nadoz (pronounced "NAH-doze" — it gets its name from the ending of the word "Coronado") as a catering company in the building of the former Coronado Hotel, near Saint Louis University in St. Louis City. Later, it opened the European-themed Nadoz Cafe, which has been operating for several years in Richmond Heights.

A doorway connects the cafe to the wine bar.

In part, Steven Becker said, he and his wife hope to attract baby boomers and empty-nesters who want to go out to eat "and walk out not feeling stuffed."

Kathy Becker said they also hope to appeal to people who use a nearby Metrolink station to travel to and from St. Louis Cardinals baseball games.

"Nothing here is crazy expensive by the bottle," said Kathy Becker. Many of its bottles range in price from $28 to $35. She owns the location with her husband, Steven.

The wine bar will be open most days from 4 to 10 p.m., though it will be open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, Kathy Becker said. It will be closed on Tuesdays.

The restaurant also will offer meals made to be paired with wine and shared by several members of a group. Among its specialities: A deconstructed reuben sandwich known as a reuben bake—it's served in a casserole dish and paired with rye crackers.

The wine bar also will serve local beers and speciality cocktails.

Other notes:

  • Kathy Schmidt is chef executive at Vino Nadoz, and Stephanie Hay is its chef du cuisine.
  • Walter Edwards is wine manager.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article and its headline incorrectly identified the opening date of Vino Nadoz. It is set to open Wednesday.
