SSM St. Mary's Offers Own Take on 'American Idol'

Nurses were among those who performed Thursday in Richmond Heights in conjunction with a competition sponsored by SSM Health Care.

staff and a visitor belted out hits Thursday in Richmond Heights as part of a system-wide singing contest.

The event, dubbed Mission Idol, is one of several aimed at getting staff excited about SSM Health Care's Mission Days celebration May 17-19, said Stacey Rynders, communications specialist at St. Mary's. That celebration focuses on reconnecting staff with the hospital system's mission statement: "Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God."

Three contestants auditioned for a chance to perform in May as part of the Mission Days Show Choir, while others—such as a group of nursing directors and leaders—sang simply for fun, Rynders said. The performances will happen at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Auditions for the choir began Tuesday. They happened throughout the hospital system, including at locations in St. Louis City, Fenton, Bridgeton, St. Charles and Lake Saint Louis.

Two or three performers from each location will be chosen for the choir, Rynders said. Winners were expected to be announced sometime this week.
