Hadley Reaction: From 'Menards. 100%' to 'This is Absurd'

Costco and Menards have proposed building a store in the Hadley Township neighborhood of Richmond Heights.

News that a section of ' Hadley Township neighborhood has prompted some strong reactions in online commentary.

On Patch, Brian C. wrote: "This is absurd. Regarding Costco, there's both a Wal-Mart and a Sam's Club literally one block south of here. For Menards, there's a Home Depot across the street and a Lowe's just south of it!"

On Facebook, Clayton-Richmond Heights Patch asked readers to weigh in on which business they would prefer to see in the space just north of Maplewood Commons.

"Menards. 100%," Frank Palubiak said.

Alexandra Welsko agreed.

"Menards, although I doubt Home Depot and Lowes will make the same selection," Welsko said.

Two other readers expressed concern about the types of businesses that have expressed interest in the site.

"Why would two big stores want to come into the same area, where they will have two big competing stores already??" Pat Wilken Maloney said. "Just to see who can drive who out of business.???"

Sara Spieker said: "Very encouraging to finally see signs of redevelopment in this area, but I'm extremely disappointed about the possibility of more big box retailers headed to the area. What happened to the MLS soccer stadium and high rises that were proposed before the recession? I know those proposals have long since been scrapped, but it would be great to see something more urban, at least more unique, in the works. Even an Ikea, while still a large retailer, would be better than a Costco! Come on, Richmond Heights, we can do better!!"

On Twitter, @GatewayStreets expressed concern about the possible use of tax increment financing to fund a Hadley Township development: "Ugh. RT @nextSTL: Out of ideas for Hadley dev, Richmond Heights likely to give TIF $ for Cosco and/or Menards."
