Fruitcake Fan: Clayton Restaurateur Talks Holiday Cheesecake

My Daddy's Cheesecake began serving the dessert last week.

One business is selling fruitcake-inspired cheesecake in honor of the holiday season.

"We get all the jokes," said Mike Schwarz, who owns on Clayton Road. He said it's fun to talk with people about the item. He has found that people either love or hate fruitcake.

"There's no in between," Schwarz said.

His grandma made fruitcake and started by soaking the dish in rum and brandy in November. It was ready to eat for Christmas.

"I thought it was great," Schwarz said.

The My Daddy's variety has a Philadelphia cream cheese base that includes fruit and nut flavors, egg nog and rum. It is topped with nuts and candied fruit.

So far, the restaurant has sold three of the cakes and is working on selling its fourth.

My Daddy's has sold the fruitcake cheesecake for the two years Schwarz has been owner. The company started 25 years ago in Cape Girardeau as a bakery. It has served as both a bakery and a restaurant for five or six years.
