City: Ritz-Carlton to Pay Fine for Violating Clayton's Smoking Ordinance

The fine and court costs stem from a party held in late January

A Clayton hotel has agreed to pay a fine and court costs in connection with a violation of the city's smoking ban in January.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis will pay a $300 fine and $26.50 in court costs, the city stated Wednesday in a news release.

The costs stem from a Jan. 22 party. The party had been planned for the Cigar Club lounge, which has an exemption. But the party was eventually held in the hotel's ballroom because of the number of people who attended, and the ballroom does not have an exemption. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote about the incident in an article Jan. 26.

The city's Board of Aldermen is expected to review the ordinance and consider amending it to prevent future misunderstandings. earlier this year.

Clayton's smoking ban took effect in the summer of 2010. took effect this January.
