Drinking Buddies

  • Run Time: 90 mins.
  • Starring: Olivia Wilde, Ron Livingston, Anna Kendrick, Jake Johnson
  • Rated: R
Mark Glass, Patch blogger: ** (R) Such a fine cast. Such a bland script by the guy who also directed. Thus did someone named Joe Swanberg waste the considerable talent and appeal of Olivia Wilde, Ron Livingston, Anna Kendrick and Jake Johnson in this severely understated romantic dramedy. Read the full review

Don Jon
  • Run Time: 90 mins.
  • Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Tony Danza, Julianne Moore, Brie Larson
  • Rated: R
Mark Glass, Patch blogger: **** (R) I’m not sure where the term "Guido" stands now on the Political Correctness scale. It was clearly pejorative until TV series like The Sopranos and Jersey Shore seemingly converted it into a cultural badge of honor. Since it so perfectly describes the cast and milieu of this deceptively smart and funny romantic dramedy, please allow me to use "G-word", with all due respect, within this review. I’m just sayin’.. Baggage Claim
  • Run Time: 112 mins.
  • Starring: Paula Patton, Adam Brody, Taye Diggs, Derek Luke, Djimon, Hounsou
  • Rated: PG-13
Mark Glass, Patch blogger: ** (PG-13) The good news about this romantic comedy is that its protagonist, Paula Patton, lights the screen with star power to spare. Her warmth and wholesome beauty could make her the next Julia Roberts/Sandra Bullock-style America’s Sweetheart. The bad news is that she’ll have to find better vehicles to bring enough bodies to the box office. Read the full review.

Rush
  • Run Time: 123 mins.
  • Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde,
  • Rated: R
Mark Glass, Patch blogger: **½ (R) This fact-based story of the rivalry between two European Formula 1 drivers in the 1970s is probably most appealing to fans of the sport, but more suspenseful for those who don’t already know what happened during their head-to-head matchups. Chris Hemsworth plays the hard-partying golden boy, England’s James Hunt; Daniel Bruhl co-stars as the decidedly charisma-impaired, smart and serious Austrian, Niki Lauda. Read the full review

Populaire
  • Run Time: 111 mins.
  • Starring: Romain Duris, Deborah Francois, Berenice Bejo
  • Rated: R
Mark Glass, Patch blogger*** ( R) Those who pine for the kind of romantic comedies that starred a Doris Day opposite a Rock Hudson or Rod Taylor in the 1960s will probably savor this mostly-subtitled French offering, set in the same era. Romain Duris has a small business in Paris. In need of a new secretary, he hires a fresh-faced country girl (Deborah Francois) despite her klutziness and naivete, because she happens to be a typing whiz, even while using only her index fingers. Read the full review.

Enough Said
  • Run Time: 91 mins.
  • Starring: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener, Toni Collette, Ben Falcone
  • Rated: PG-13
Mark Glass, Patch blogger:  ***½ (PG-13)Here’s one of those rare romantic comedies for grownups that works well without hyperbolizing the second-time-around anxieties of the players. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini are divorced single parents who meet at a party. She also meets a divorced single mom, Catherine Keener, who becomes one of her massage clients, then a friend. Read the full review
