Based on the novel by Ayn Rand, Howard Roark (Gary Cooper) is an avant–garde architect who defies conventional standards and destroys his own buildings when they fail to meet his idealized conceptions. King Vidor has given the film a look very much in keeping with the simple, austere lines reflected in Roark's architecture and Rand's philosophy. Also starring Patricia Neal and Raymond Massey.
