Patch Picks: Five Alternative Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day

This year, skip brunch in favor of showing Mom a good time she won't forget.

Most Mother’s Day celebrations are aimed at nuclear families. If you have a hard-working single mom, don’t insult her by cramming her into a long brunch line alongside happily married women. Instead, take her to one of these alternative celebrations where you spend time together building up special memories involving mint juleps, microbreweries or marvelous art.

St. Louis Microfest
Forest Park is always a good place for quality time with Mom, but this weekend, it’s home to a microbrewery festival. It’s your turn to play designated driver while she samples brews from around the world. After a few hours at the festival, she may take home the commemorative tasting glass, a six-pack of her favorite new microbrew and your future stepfather’s phone number.

Laumeier Art Fair
If your mom is into artsy types, take her to the Laumeier Art Fair, where she can meet dozens of artists selling original work including paintings, ceramics and jewelry. Buy her a beer or ice cream as a distraction. When something catches her eye, sneakily pay for it and slip a surprise present into her purse. If the right person catches her eye, you can also slip a phone number into her purse.

Free Comic Book Day
Who says comics are just for kids? These days, comics are mostly written for a demographic of men ages 35 to 55, so if you have a single mom with a good sense of humor who likes quiet, shy guys, you can take her shopping for your new stepfather while picking up something fun to read. Stop by any comic book store in St. Louis.

90 Degrees West Kentucky Derby Party
If Mom thinks whiskers and twitchy tails are cute, take her to the 90 Degrees West derby party. They’re featuring live mouse racing. Oh sure, the $20 admission also includes food, mint juleps and a chance to watch the horses. But how can that beat real live four-footed mammal races you can cheer in person? This also happens to have a reputation as one rollicking party and a great chance to meet new people.

The Royale 6th Annual Kentucky Derby Party
If Mom doesn’t have a dramatic hat, then this is your excuse to spend Friday night adding feathers and flowers to her special Mother’s Day present. Admission to The Royale’s Derby party is only $6, leaving you plenty of extra cash to buy her some mint juleps and southern-themed snacks. Cheer her on during the best hat contest and, if your mom is divorced, look the other way while she chats with the gents competing to win best dressed jockey.
