In honor of the City of Clayton's 100th anniversary, a site-specific sculpture by internationally-recognized artist James Surls will be installed in Shaw Park's Century Garden.

In honor of the City of Clayton’s 100th anniversary, a sculpture by artist James Surls will be installed in Shaw Park’s Century Garden.

The installation will be held between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29.

The 3500-pound, 19-foot stainless steel and bronze sculpture will arrive in one piece on a flatbed and be installed by crane on the site. A community celebration will follow at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30.

The piece will be placed in the Century Garden in Clayton’s Shaw Park.

James Surls’ sculpture "Molecular Bloom with Single Flower" is designed to emphasize the importance of the City of Clayton’s 100 years of incorporation as a municipality and to promote the region’s artistic stature.

“Molecular Bloom with Single Flower will be a welcoming gateway to the City of Clayton and to Shaw Park’s Brentwood Boulevard entrance,” Clayton Mayor Harold Sanger said in a press release. “We are very proud to have a major American artist of Surls’s stature creating a new landmark for our community and for everyone in the metropolitan area to enjoy.”
