The Heights Hosts Annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony

Richmond Heights event featured activities for children, dancers and a visit from Santa Claus.

Residents kicked off the holidays at The Heights Community Center with a lighting ceremony on Nov. 19.

The Heights — covered in lights, wreaths and holiday statues — set the mood for friends and neighbors. Spectators filled the lobby to enjoy arts and crafts and dance performances. About 300 people attended the event.

"It took four days, if not a little longer, to strand all these lights," said Scott Davis, recreation facility superintendent. Workers used about 8,000 bulbs in the city-sponsored display, not counting those hung at nearby Richmond Heights City Hall and along Big Bend Boulevard.

Steve Hamilton has lived in Richmond Heights for five years and said he comes to The Heights every year because of the wonderful show and beautiful lights.

"Just being a resident and the Christmas spirit keeps me coming back," Hamilton said. "Gives people a chance to start the season off right."

First-time attendee Almut, who gave only her first name, said she heard about the display and wanted to see what continues to bring people to the event.

"It gave me and my family something to do tonight, and I felt that it was a good chance to meet some more people of the community," Almut said.

At 6:15 p.m., Mayor James Beck flipped the switch, and the crowd applauded.

Members of a local fire department arrived soon after with Santa Claus, who gave gifts to the children, and Aalim belly dancers from The Studio Brentwood performed at the event.

"We like to change the performances each year, but I think this one was probably the best yet," recreation superintendent Anna Shy said.

Attendees had access to crafts and refreshments throughout the night. Volunteers and employees set out a table covered with cookies, juice and water, while other tables included festive projects for the children.

"The children love being a part of this event. Making holiday ornaments and visiting with Santa puts smiles on all their faces," Shy said.

Shy said that while the city is responsible for decorating several landmarks, the residents of Richmond Heights go all out on their decorations, as well.

"People can see the lights at City Hall and up and down the streets, but people should really drive and see the display that our residents put on," she said.

The display at The Heights will remain until Jan. 2 and will be lit every night after dark. For more information on upcoming holiday events, go to The Heights Web site and check out the Clayton-Richmond Heights Patch calendar.

"We have something almost every weekend and throughout the week," Shy said. "People should really come and see what our community can do."
