Clayton Students Take Six-Week Science Research Program

It happened this summer at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

A group of students spent six weeks this summer performing intensive research as part of a science program offered at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL).

Chris Cho, Sakura Oyama and David Behrend joined roughly 80 other peers, a university news release issued this week states. The program—called Students and Teachers as Research Scientists —pairs students with research mentors from UMSL, Washington University, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Saint Louis University and the company Solae.

“High school students interested in a science career get a big head start with their participation,” UMSL Chancellor Tom George stated in the release.

In addition to conducting research, students learned how to apply to college and engaged in activities such as bowling, a movie, an ice cream social and a St. Louis Cardinals game.

The program drew participants from 33 high schools in the St. Louis area and from California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa and Greece.
